Spanish learning from preschool to teens

There is more than one way to start learning Spanish. A child’s age helps you think about appropriate activities, but their interests and previous experience also deserve attention.

Ages 3–5: start with play

Young learners can explore greetings, colours and familiar words through songs, stories and movement. Ask about an approach that leaves room for listening and participation without expecting every child to speak immediately. Our Preschool Spanish program is for this age group.

Ages 6–9: connect words with their world

School-age children may enjoy games, creative activities and conversations about familiar situations. Vocabulary can have a purpose when a child uses it to choose, ask or describe something. Explore Kids Spanish.

Ages 10–12: make room for questions and ideas

Preteens can have strong interests and plenty to say. Projects and topics connected to their world can offer opportunities to use Spanish in context. Spanish Club is our program for ages 10–12.

Ages 13–17: let goals guide the conversation

A teenager might be interested in travel, family connections, a school subject or simply trying something new. Invite them to explain what they want to do with Spanish and discuss a starting point that fits their experience. Explore Teens Spanish.

Age is a starting point, not the whole picture

Two children of the same age may have very different experiences with Spanish. Share that background when enquiring about a class. A conversation about interests, goals and scheduling helps your family make an informed choice.
